KAMPONG GELAM
Kampong Gelam design is a celebration of the rich cultural heritage in this seaside village of 19th-century Singapore. Today, the buzzling area is known for its immersive historical experiences, charming shophouse architecture, authentic Malay cuisine, colourful textile shops, handmade Persian carpets, exotic perfumes and of course . Featured in this design is the grand Masjid Sultan, the Sultan Gate and the Malay Heritage Centre interspersed with traditional batik-style fabric decoration. In Malay, ‘kampong’ means ‘compound’ and 'gelam' is the paperbark tree that used to flourish in the village, providing medicinal, cookery and even boat-building benefits to the locals.
